Balangay was first mentioned in the Chronicles of Pigafetta in the 16th
century and was considered as oldest watercraft found in the Philippines(320 CE).
It was a boat made from wooden planks joined by pins and dowels was the first
watercraft excavated within the Southeast Asia. Even before modern
sailboats were invented, Filipinos have the bragging rights to call
themselves as one of the best boat makers across Asia. (Need modern sailboats? Just visit: Rayomarine Boats Philippines)
Where Was Balangays Used
Even before modern boats were invented, boats have been essential to
help aid Filipinos in their daily lives. In the Northern Luzon, Balangays were used as
a medium to get the food for the Ibanags. The Cagayan River and the Babuyan
Channel have been a part of the Ibanags lives as a place where they fish and
trade. In the Visayas, “balangays”
are used to get cargos and was called Bidok, Biroko, Biray or Lapid.
Early Discoveries
In the 1970s, nine boats were discovered to be found n Butuan City,
Agusan Del Norte. It was accidentally discovered by locals searching for
alluvial gold in the land near Masao River. Three of the nine boats was already
been excavated by the National Museum team and has been under preservation. The first one, also called as Butuan One, dated
320CE, was displayed in Balangay Shrine Museum in Butuan. The Boat Two, dated 1250CE was now displayed
in the National Museum in Manila.
Today
As of today, 3 replicas of the mighty boats used by our ancestors are
now in use to remind the Filipinos that we were once King
of the seas which sailed through the countries in the South East Asia and China.
